Browns waive Connor Shaw, leaving four quarterbacks on roster

The crowded quarterback room of the Browns became a little less crammed Thursday when they waived Connor Shaw.

The move leaves four quarterbacks on the roster: Robert Griffin III, Josh McCown, rookie third-round draft pick Cody Kessler and Austin Davis. Coach Hue Jackson has said competition in training camp, which opens July 29, would determine the starter. Griffin, who signed a two-year, $15 million in March, is the clear favorite.

Shaw, 24, spent the past two seasons with the Browns after joining them in 2014 as an undrafted free agent from the University of South Carolina. He missed all of last season after suffering a right thumb injury in the exhibition opener and undergoing surgery. As a rookie, Shaw spent 16 weeks on the practice squad before starting the regular-season finale. He completed 14-of-28 passes for 177 yards with one interception and a passer rating of 55.2 in a 20-10 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

“Thankful for the two years spent in CLE,” Shaw wrote on Twitter. “Learned & grew a lot! Ready to see where God guides my family next!”
